Why are road markings still easy to see after dark? The answer lies in retroreflectivity—the ability of road markings to reflect light from vehicle headlights back to the driver's eyes. High retroreflectivity helps drivers clearly clearly lanes and road guidance at night, reducing the risk of accidents.

To evaluate this performance, traffic engineers use specialized instruments like the
TBT Road Marking Retroreflectometer. This instrument measures the retroreflectivity of road markings, providing accurate data for quality control, maintenance planning, and compliance with international standards.

This article explains what retroreflectivity is, how retroreflectometers measure it, and why regular testing is important for safer roads.

What Is Road Marking Retroreflectivity?

Retroreflectivity describes a material's ability to reflect incoming light back toward its original source, rather than scattering it in all directions. For road markings, this means that light from vehicle headlights is reflected back toward the driver, making lane lines look bright and visible at night. Unlike ordinary surface reflection, retroreflection relies on special optical structures, such as glass beads or reflective elements---embedded directly into the pavement marking paint or thermoplastic material.

When headlights hit these materials:

1. Light enters the embedded glass beads.
2. Light bends and reflects off the inner back surface of the bead.
3. Light travels back directly toward the driver's eyes.

This optical effect makes road markings clearly visible in the dark.

The performance of road marking retroreflectivity is expressed by the coefficient of retroreflected luminance (RL), measured in:

Mcd*m-2*lx-1(or mcd/m2/lux)

Higher RL value = Better nighttime visibility and safer driving conditions.

How Is Road Marking Retroreflectivity Measured?

A road marking retroreflectometer measures the retroreflective quality of pavement markings by simulating real-world driving conditions—specifically, the geometry between a vehicle's headlights, the road surface, and the driver's line of sight.

How a measurement works:

1. Light Emission: The instrument projects a calibrated light beam onto the road marking at a specific standard angle.

2. Light Collection: The glass beads return a portion of the light back toward the instrument's sensor.

3. Data Calculation: The device measures the intensity of the returned light and automatically calculates the retroreflection coefficient (RL ).

Modern retroreflectometers are built for fast, accurate field testing, allowing engineers and maintenance teams to evaluate road markings directly on highways, city streets, and airports.

It supports the comprehensive measurement of daytime visibility (Qd), nighttime visibility (RL) and RL under

standard conditions of wetness.

TBTRMR-VM

TBTRMR-VM is an advanced vehicle-mounted mobile retroreflectometer designed with a scanning laser source

to provide continuous pavement marking assessment at normal highway speeds.

Why Is Regular Testing Important?

Over time, road markings lose their retroreflectivity due to vehicle tire wear, dirt, rain, and UV exposure. Regular testing with a retroreflectometer helps road authorities:

  • Identify worn-out markings before they become safety hazards.

  • Plan repaving and re-striping budgets based on real data rather than guesswork.

  • Ensure compliance with national and international road safety regulations.

By combining quality materials with regular testing, transportation agencies can ensure roads remain safe for every driver, night after night.
